Cultural Practices in Grief

 

DESCRIPTION

In this panel discussion, moderated by Bevin Campbell and Nicole Alston, you will learn about a range of cultural practices, traditions, rituals, and beliefs around death, grief, and loss. This session will begin with a brief introduction, followed by a diverse panel sharing their perspective on the unique rituals, traditions, and beliefs of their cultures of origin.

There will be an opportunity to create connections and community with other helping professionals who support bereaved individuals.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Participants will:

  • Expand your understanding of diverse cultural experiences and meanings that create the context for each individual’s experience of grief
  • Become familiar with a broad range of grieving practices to expand your perspective on ways of coping with loss
  • Increase your capacity to empathize with and support diverse community members

WHAT TO EXPECT

This is a virtual course that will be held on Zoom. The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A.

ELIGIBILITY

This course is for staff of NYC non-profit community-based organizations or government agencies that deliver social services.
