A Deeper Look at MI Skills: Reflections

Getting It Right Together: From Understanding to Exploring Ambivalence

DESCRIPTION

This practice-intensive virtual workshop deepens strengthens and expands how helpers use reflections in Motivational Interviewing. Participants will move beyond fear of 'being wrong' to embrace reflections as a collaborative tool for deeper understanding.

The workshop focuses on two critical applications: (1) listening deeply to understand another person and reflecting to show that understanding. We will explore how, recognizing that accurate understanding cy comes through collaboration with the speaker, not perfection; and (2) using reflections strategically to help clients explore both sides of their ambivalence without rushing to resolution.

Through extensive practice, participants will develop confidence and skills  to apply in your applicable to their daily practice, regardless of MI experience level.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Participants will:

  • Listen with the intent to understand rather than to respond
  • Formulate reflections that demonstrate deep understanding of client experience
  • Take thoughtful risks with complex reflections without fear of “being wrong”
  • Use reflections strategically to help clients explore both sides of their ambivalence
  • Respond skillfully when reflections miss the mark

WHAT TO EXPECT

This is a highly interactive virtual workshop; most of the session will be spent in practice exercises and debriefs guided by the instructor, with minimal didactic content. It emphasizes experiential learning through practice with real (not role-played) content. Participants will work in small groups in breakout rooms for multiple practice rounds with rotating roles. Participants should come prepared to practice skills with cameras and microphones on, share authentic personal reflections, and give/receive supportive feedback in their breakout groups.

Because this course is so interactive, capacity is limited. Please only register at this time if you can commit to:

  • Attend the full session
  • Participate on camera
  • Participate in small and large group practice activities and debriefs. This will require speaking using your computer microphone.

It is not possible to participate in this skill-building workshop off-camera or only via chat.
