Open Art Studio Workshop

Restoring Service Providers through the Creative Process

DESCRIPTION

Led by licensed creative art therapists Kimberly Faulkner and Deborah Rice, this in-person workshop invites you into a journey of artistic discovery through an open studio approach. Participants will be introduced to a variety of art materials and creative techniques, then encouraged to develop your own artistic voice through independent creation.

The workshop creates a supportive environment where everyone can explore, nurture, and discover the restorative aspects of the creative process at their own pace. It is designed specifically for NYC non-profit care providers who may want to explore the role creative practices can play in protecting your wellbeing and resiliency as helpers.  Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with your creativity and experience the healing potential of artistic expression.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Participants will:

  • Experience working with a variety of art materials and creative techniques in a nonjudgmental setting.
  • Develop your individual creative voice through an independent process in an open studio environment.
  • Discover restorative and healing aspects of the creative process.
  • Consider how to integrate creative expression into your ongoing self-care practice.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This workshop will include an introduction to art materials and art activities, along with a brief self-reflective meditation, followed by 1.5 hours of art making and a debrief discussion.

We will:

  • Engage in art making. Each learner will have a chance to work on an independent creative project at your own pace, using a variety of art materials.
  • Reflect on the creative process.
  • Discuss your observations of the creative process, including how it may relate to your resiliency as service providers.
  • Consider your ideas about adopting artistic practices as self-care.

ELIGIBILITY

This course is open to NYC non-profit care providers, including staff of non-profit community-based organizations and government agencies who deliver social or behavioral health care in NYC. It is especially for those who are interested in exploring firsthand the potential benefits of art and creative expression to help manage the emotional demands of your work.

No prior art experience is required. This is a process-focused space, not product-focused.

This in-person workshop is limited to 25 participants.
