Trauma-Informed Supervision
DESCRIPTION
This course equips supervisors to create work environments that help protect staff from the impacts of primary and secondary traumas so they can deliver healing-centered care. Trauma-Informed Supervision builds on Foundations of Care to support supervisors in strengthening compassionate self-awareness and skills to navigate challenging supervisory situations, contributing to healthier work environments that support longevity in this work for supervisors and their supervisees.
Trauma-informed care requires more than training direct care staff. Consistent and thoughtful action from leaders and supervisors can turn trauma-informed principles into sustainable and meaningful practice. This course emphasizes the role of supervisors in shaping organizational environments and staff experiences. As supervisors, you will examine and enact commitments and practices that facilitate healing-centered relationships among and between supervisors, staff, and clients.
This Trauma-Informed Supervision course was piloted and co-designed with input from a cross-section of staff from more than 25 NYC community-based organizations (CBOs) and city agencies. It offers supervisors guidance and tools to center care for staff as a foundational element of trauma-informed care, and works to address the high levels of stress, trauma, and loss experienced by social service providers and the communities they serve.
Through interactive training and weekly skills practice, supervisors will be better equipped to:
- Understand and address power dynamics in supervisory relationships;
- Respond effectively to staff in distress;
- Create space to attend to emotions while balancing the important work of delivering services;
- Deliver meaningful and effective feedback;
- and more.
Pre-requisite: Trauma-Informed Supervision is open to supervisors who have completed the Academy course, Foundations of Care, or other multi-session courses at the Academy, such as Deep Roots: Practices to Heal Complex Trauma, CBRT, Connecting Through Art & Creative Expression, Motivational Interviewing Foundations, or Understanding Grief and Loss.
WHAT TO EXPECT
This interactive course integrates research-based frameworks, tools, and skills with time for practice, reflection, and discussion. Live sessions will meet bi-weekly so supervisors have time to absorb and apply skills and concepts between sessions. After each live session, supervisors will be guided to practice and reflect on strategies that help you:
- Acknowledge and mitigate the harms of primary and vicarious trauma on yourselves and your staff
- Practice and model specific supervisory skills and tools
- Continue to build personal practices to center the nervous system and maintain your own well-being
To fully engage with the course material and cohort members, participants are asked to:
- Join from a quiet, private space
- Use a desktop or laptop computer with updated Zoom. Participating from a mobile phone will not be possible
- Be on camera for the duration of the session
